The High Route
"A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain."
From The Wilderness Act of 1964

Idaho's Park-N-Ski Program

Idaho backcountry yurts

Idaho has a serious cross-country ski program in place. It supports 180 miles of marked groomed and ungroomed ski trails in some of Idaho's most scenic country. Park-N-Ski has 18 areas to choose from divided into 4 regions.

Each trail condition can vary from a 10-foot skating lane with set track for traditional kick and glide skiers, to a set track and no skating lanes and others have no grooming at all. The fee's go towards maintaining the trails, plowing parking lots, and grooming trails. With the priority keeping access to ski areas and plowed parking lots.

Idaho also offers a Yurt system on some of these trails for overnight backcountry stays. There are 6 yurts set up in the Idaho City area. It is a 2-3 mile ski into these units and they sleep 6 people.
Dozens of cabins are also available in the parks for great winter skiing adventures.

For more info check these pages. Park Yurts and Park Cabins.

What is a Yurt.
The yurt is a circular, Mongolian-style domed tent 20 feet in diameter with a plywood floor, hardwood lattice sidewalls and a clear Plexiglas skylight. This fully insulated shelter is designed to withstand high winds, snow loads and summer heat. They also have lockable windows and doors to keep your equipment secure. They look natural in the forest and are very comfortable
